Coral Springs Charter softball hoping to upset Gulliver Prep

Coral Springs Charter reached the regional finals for the first time in school history Wednesday, beating Miami-Monsignor Pace 13-0 in the semifinals after stomping Miami-Archbishop Carroll 15-0 in the quarterfinals.

Now comes the real challenge – knocking off Miami-Gulliver Prep.

An impossible task? Perhaps. After all, Gulliver Prep is a three-time reigning state champ, and was ranked fourth among all classifications in the latest Miracle Sports state softball poll.

“The bottom line is they’re the class of 4A,” said Coral Springs Charter coach Mark Montimurro. “If you’re going to win a state title, you’re going to have to beat them sooner or later. Their program is where we eventually want to be.”

Montimurro’s team at University School lost to Gulliver Prep in the regional finals last year and the regional semifinals in 2011. His team at Charter this year can compete with Gulliver, but only if it’s pitching is solid. Heather Bramos will get the start in the circle Friday.

“If we show up and it’s an A-plus performance by us, we’ve got a shot,” Montimurro said.
