Blue Star Museum program offers free museum entry for military and families

Free museum entry for military and families with Blue Star Museum Program kicks off on Memorial Day.

The Blue Star Museum program kicks off on Memorial Day, offering soldiers and their families free visits to museums and gardens.

The program, in its eighth year, offers free entry at more than 2,000 U.S. museums, art centers and botanical gardens for active duty, National Guard and Reserve military personnel and up to five family members through Sept. 4.

Participating cultural institutions and gardens in South Florida include the new Frost Museum of Science in Miami, NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale, the Stranahan House, Vizcaya Museum and Gardens, Fairchild Tropical Botanic Gardens, the Perez Art Museum Miami, Deering Estate, Boca Raton History Museum, Mounts Botanical Garden, the Schoolhouse Children's Museum in Boynton Beach and the South Florida Science Center and Aquarium in West Palm Beach, among others.

Founded in 2010, the program is a collaboration between Blue Star Families, the National Endowment for the Arts and the Department of Defense. Last year, more than 900,000 families used the program, according to a NEA news release.

More museums are expected to be added to the list as the summer progresses.
