Terri Schiavo, March 31

Terri Schiavo, the brain-damaged woman who was taken off a feeding tube by court order and starved to death, died on Thursday, March 31, 2005, at a hospice in Pinellas Park. She was 41. She died 13 days after her feeding tube was removed by a judge's order. Her husband, Michael Schiavo, who requested the feeding tube be taken out, said his wife told him long ago that she would not want to be kept alive artificially. However, her parents, Bob and Mary Schindler, disputed that, and held out hope for a miracle recovery after 15 years. Schiavo entered a coma-like state on Feb. 25, 1990, after suffering cardiac arrest and collapsing in the hallway of her St. Petersburg apartment. Doctors would later suspect a potassium imbalance brought on by an eating disorder. Parents and husband have feuded since then.
