The Heart of the Beach: Bathing Suits
In 1904, following a fire aboard a NYC excursion boat that resulted in the deaths of 1,000 women and girls (out of 1,300), bodies lie on the bank of the East River. Most were the victims of drowning because at that time women did not know how to swim. Until 9/11 this disaster represented the greatest loss of life in NYC.
