For all her sardonic charms, there is a nagging guilt in being beguiled by the sugary confections of Lily Allen, who announced a fall tour on Monday that will open Sept. 9 in Miami Beach.
So the title of her long-awaited third album, “Sheezus,” was a tonic. Surely the sharp-tongued Allen would be delivering a blunt Brit-slap at the bloated bombast of Kanye “Yeezus” West. But, no.
Describing the album, her first since 2009's “It's Not You, It's Me,” as a collection of “silly songs about stuff,” Allen recently told the Atlantic that the title is meant as a punny compliment.
“I love Kanye and think he’s amazing, and because I’d been away for a while, there was a resurrection element to it,” she says. “I was really trying to push for the album to be released on Easter Sunday.”
Clearly, Allen has returned from marriage and motherhood (two daughters) with her sense of humor intact. Her first single from the album, “Hard Out Here,” is a blistering satire of music-video misogyny.
“I won't be bragging 'bout my cars or talking 'bout my chains,” she sings. “Don't need to shake my ass for you ’cause I've got a brain.”
Wait, was that a Kim Kardashian crack?
