The weight of handpicking and vetting the artists for the All Florida Juried Competition and Exhibition fell this year on the shoulders of Mark Scala, chief curator at the Frist Center for the Visual Arts in Nashville. The 62nd edition, a showcase of all the weird ephemera that makes up our fair state, will present 122 artists and 149 works from Wednesday through July 14 at the Boca Raton Museum of Art (501 Plaza Real). The summer staple, which the museum brands a "testament to the state's flourishing art scene," falls somewhere between provocative and whimsical: Boynton Beach photographer Larry Colby's "Passing Time" captures the moment when an elderly traveler tosses his cowboy hat in the air, suspending it like a halo above the scene. In the video "Disrupted Pleasure: Sweet," Miami's Gabrielle Wood unbuttons her shirt behind a birthday cake, only to violate the striptease by revealing a grotesque-looking goiter. "Instant gratification inevitably turns to self-loathing," Wood explains on her website. And how! $5-$8. 561-392-2500 or BocaMuseum.org.
