For Mindy Segal, chef/owner of award-winning Bucktown restaurant Hot Chocolate, celebrating Hanukkah with her family means sitting down to one of her favorite meals of the year, cooked by her mother. "She makes potato latkes, and she makes brisket, and she makes her homemade applesauce and it's an amazing dinner, like the best dinner she makes," she said. "It's delicious and I look forward to it every year." Segal also celebrates Christmas with her husband's family in Peotone, Ill. "We go to his family's [house] and we sleep overnight ... Their tradition is that they make soup Christmas Eve, and then they have a beautiful meal the next day." Last year, she made pozole; this year, the plan is split-pea.
