The cast and crew of "Betrayal" may be filming the ABC potboiler in Chicago, but it hasn't been all work for some of them.
"It's crazy cuz every place stays open so late," Henry Thomas told me during a Sept. 23 premiere party at Vertigo Sky Lounge. "It's a real bar culture. It's a little too easy to go, 'Oh my God, it's 3 o'clock in the morning. I've walked across the bridge going, 'Oh no, we have to police ourselves.'"
Thomas plays TJ Karsten in the series, which has the unfortunate premiere slot of 9 p.m. CT Sunday opposite the "Breaking Bad" series finale. TJ is the mentally challenged son of Thatcher Karsten (James Cromwell), a ruthless businessman whose legally murky business practices land him in court where he is being defended by his son-in-law, Jack McCallister (Stuart Townsend), who in the series premiere begins an extramarital affair with Sara Stafford (Hannah Ware), the wife of aspiring politico Drew Stafford (Chris Johnson), the prosecutor who Jack will face in court.
Get all that? Anyway, during the premiere event I was able to wrangle Thomas, recent Emmy-winner Cromwell, Townsend and Johnson to talk about their roles and time in Chicago.
I also chatted with Braeden Lemasters and Elizabeth McLaughlin, who play Jack's twins, Victor and Valerie. The young stars have found some favorite spots around the city, including the Wormhole in Wicker Park and Gino's pizza. Lemasters also used his down time to hit Lollapalooza.
"We got so lucky that we're shooting her," McLaughlin said. "It's such a beautiful city."
Johnson has discovered a completely different kind of benefit to filming in Chicago: free childcare. His wife is from Lincoln Park.
"Her in-laws are here to help with the kids," he said. "We have a five-day-old and a daughter in pre-school, so she can help with all that while I'm out dealing with my TV wife having an affair on me."
"Betrayal" premieres at 9 p.m. CT Sept. 29 on ABC.
