For a while after the demise of Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins was the top alternative rock band on the planet, pumping out quality tunes with an accessible emotional appeal. The band's high point, of course, was the release of the double album "Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness" in 1995, an ambitious, expansive album that spawned four hit singles and newfound acclaim. Billy Corgan's "band" has become more of a one-man show, but his work under the Pumpkins banner still is head-and-shoulders above most rock bands out there.
