2. "Melancholia"

Lars von Trier, kicked out of Cannes for his ignorant joke that won't be repeated here, should just let his work do the talking. The beautiful, terrifying "Melancholia" confronts depression and the end of the world with devastating focus, at least in the sense that we don't necessarily know when they're coming, and everyone's understanding differs. Kirsten Dunst's career-best performance will likely get edged out of an Oscar nomination, which hurts too.
