17. 'The Way, Way Back'

Sam Rockwell won't get nearly the kind of praise he deserves for his supporting role as Owen, the irresponsible water park manager and mentor to young, shy Duncan (Liam James). His offbeat energy spreads throughout "The Way Way Back," which isn't the first movie about a life-changing summer and having a mom (Allison Janney) with a jerky boyfriend (Steve Carell), but writers/directors Nat Faxon and Jim Rash make it easy to accept familiar elements by doing such a good job of capturing life as a mission to gather the confidence needed to sort the good from the bad and know which one you deserve.
