Babylon awarded Red Cross' highest volunteer honor

Caroline Babylon was the recipient of the 2012 Clara Barton Award, the localAmericanRed Cross' highest volunteer honor.

The award was presented last month during the 107th annual meeting of the American Red Cross of the Chesapeake Region.

A 25-year veteran volunteer, Babylon has worked as part of the Red Cross Disaster Action Team to provide emergency shelter, food, clothing, emotional support and other aid to victims of regional disasters.

Babylon has also participated in numerous national disaster responses including flooding in West Virginia, an earthquake in Los Angeles, flooding in Missouri and Illinois and was part of the response team for Hurricane Andrew.

Babylon is married to former Westminster mayor and Eagle columnist Kevin Dayhoff, and lives in Westminster

Fellow Carroll Countian, Phil Deitchman, was presented with the Clara D. Tucker Award.

Deitchman has been an active Red Cross volunteer since 1998. He has assisted in numerous assignments including working as part of the Disaster Action Team and is a volunteer CPR instructor who has taught over 100 classes.

Occasionally, he dons the Red Cross mascot costume and presents safety information to area school children.

The Red Cross also elected its slate of board members at the meeting including the re-election of David O' Callaghan who represents Carroll County.
