The latest fitness craze, FloYo (stand-up paddleboard yoga) has come to the pool at Bel Air Athletic Club, in cooperation with Ultimate Watersports.
FloYo is a fusion of yoga and Pilates; the class blends the fundamentals of each discipline while incorporating the added core challenge of balancing on a standup paddleboard (SUP). Both core and flexibility training are used to lengthen and strengthen the body. If you have mastered your downward facing dog and sun salutations on the mat, you will be pleasantly surprised by the challenge of trying these same poses on the unstable surface of a SUP. Because the poses are being performed on a moving surface, you will be engaging muscles that you would not normally, and because the poses have to be aligned just perfectly for even weight distribution on the boards, you will not only be benefiting from a challenging class but you will also be improving your in-studio yoga practice as well.
"In addition to being a fantastic core workout and a great way to add variety to your fitness routine, FloYo is one of the best ways to connect your mind and body. Just one class will add a whole new element of intense focus and single pointed concentration to your workout. The second your mind wanders you will be off the board and in the water," Jessie Benson, SUP Fitness Instructor and creator of FloYo, said in a press release.
After trying one of these classes you may be secretly hoping to fall off the board and slip into the water just to cool off and get a little breather. The indoor FloYo classes being offered at the BAAC are a great way for beginners to try the sport. SUP is one of the fastest growing watersports in the country and can be found on almost any body of water from the Great Lakes to the Chesapeake Bay.
"Bringing the boards here to the Bel Air Athletic Club pool is a great opportunity to introduce more people to the sport. Many first-timers are hesitant about trying SUP on open water due to a fear of falling in. However, here in the pool we eliminate that fear and give you the unique opportunity to try the class in a heated pool. In its 27th year, Ultimate Watersports offers SUP lessons, rentals, tours and fitness classes from May to October at their two waterfront locations in Middle River.
