"Melodies at the Movies III" livened up the patrons wait time at Bow Tie Cinemas in Westfield Annapolis Mall recently.
Singers ranging from 5-year-olds to retires performed as part of the Anne Arundel Music Teachers Association's recital program in a most unusual venue.
This year, 90 students performed in six recitals representing 14 teachers. Ellen Winner, spokeswomen for the group, said this is an annual event for AAMTA, and has been for more than 20 years.
"For many years the recital was held in other parts of the mall. This is the third year at the cinema and we are grateful to management."
AAMTA is an affiliate of Maryland State Music Teachers Association and Music Teachers National Association. Performances give students valuable opportunities to be in front of an audience.
Other events AAMTA holds during the year include various competitions and other recitals. The last of these Melodies at the Movies recitals was held Nov. 14 and included 15 students. A few of the teachers represented at the recital were Suzanne Hilton, Raymond Hobbs, Nina Kozin, Liliya Lyon, Adriana Schueckler and Elizabeth Shafer.
Two local students performing were Chloe Winter of Odenton, and Mary Grace DeBruyn of Jessup. Both are piano students of Elizabeth Shafer, who teaches in Odenton. Winter performed "My Answer" by Lee Joohyung, followed by DeBruyn playing "Prelude in C Major #1(BWV 846) by Johann Sebastian Bach. The venue, said Winter, "was definitely unique."
