A giant, 18-foot-long oarfish was caught in California this weekend.
It took 15 people to pull in a massive, 18-foot-long oarfish caught off the California coast Sunday afternoon.
The slender, shimmery fish generally lurk at the deepest depths of the ocean, so for Catalina Island Marine Institute instructor Jasmine Santana and her team to spot the specimen was a rare occurence indeed, according to Reuters.
Realizing the prehistoric-looking creature was dead, the team decided to pull it into their boat so tissues samples could be sent to a fish expert at the University of California at Santa Barbara.
Given that oarfish can grow up to 56 feet long, it's no wonder the species often inspires tall tales of sea serpents and other monsters lurking in the deep blue seas.
