Report: Key witness in George Zimmerman trial gets diploma, fulfilling promise

Rachel Jeantel, the young woman who was on the phone with Trayvon Martin in the moments before his fatal encounter with George Zimmerman, fulfilled a promise she made to the slain 17-year-old by getting her high school diploma on Friday, according to a Yahoo! News report.

According to the report, Trayvon's mother, Sybrina Fulton, attended Friday's ceremony. Jeantel described Fulton's presence as "like having Trayvon there saying, 'You did it. You proved people wrong,'" Yahoo! reported.

Jeantel was a key witness against Zimmerman. Prosecutors said she spoke to Trayvon as he fled, before Zimmerman shot the teen Feb. 26, 2012. Zimmerman, who said he fired in self-defense after he was attacked by Trayvon, was later acquitted of second-degree murder.
