Lake Howell linebacker Christian Jones, one of the state's most-coveted uncommitted football prospects, has been quite busy this month.
But it turned out that even for Christian Jones his scheduled activities for this final week of the 2010 recruiting period were too much. Jones was slated to make a quick, unofficial trip to the University of Miami on Friday, but he decided to cancel the visit since he was to play in a basketball tournament Saturday night, according to Lake Howell football coach Tom Oliver.
He will, however, still visit two college campuses this week, somehow squeezed into a schedule that includes six high school basketball games before National Signing Day, which is just 10 days away, Feb. 3.
Jones' mother, Carralyn Jones, confirmed this week that her son will take a midweek visit to Florida State on Tuesday or Wednesday, before heading off to Southern Cal next weekend for his final trip of the recruiting season.
Jones has become accustomed to juggling football and basketball. Last July he spent a weekend at Disney's Wide World of Sports, participating in both the ESPN Rise Gridiron Kings football event and an AAU basketball tournament.
"Christian has so much going on and there's not much time left [before signing day]," Oliver said. "He enjoys basketball and he doesn't ever want to let anybody down."
Jones took officials to Notre Dame, Tennessee, Alabama and Oklahoma during the fall. He has visited both FSU and UF numerous times, unofficially.
He was set for a December trip to USC at one point but canceled after injuring his back in a basketball game. His second scheduled trip to USC was the weekend after Pete Carroll had announced his decision to leave the school and Jones figured USC was out of the picture.
But in stepped Lane Kiffin and now USC is back on the board.
