Pulse shooter’s wife will change child’s name

Named for mass murderer, child will get new moniker

Noor Salman, former wife of the late mass murderer Omar Mateen, has filed a petition in California courts to change the name of her child.

The child, who is four years old, is named Zakariaya Omar Mateen. His mother is apparently going to abandon the part that identifies him as the mass shooter’s son. But court records were not immediately available saying what his new name would be.

Facebook photos of Salman, Mateen and the son were circulated around the globe after the June 12 attack, although most mainstream media blurred the face of the child.

The shooter's father claimed after the tragedy that Omar Mateen had been angered when two men kissed each other in front of his son, one day in Miami.

Salman has fled from media attention since the shooting, where Mateen killed 49 people at the Pulse nightclub near downtown Orlando on June 12, and wounded at least 60 others.

She moved from their former home in Fort Pierce back to her native Southern California. She has granted only one full interview about her life in the aftermath, to the New York Times in October.

She told the Times the events left her "shattered and afraid” and she often “can’t get out of bed and depends on family members to take care of her son.”

She has moved three times since the attack, hoping to avoid the media, and asked that her current location not be disclosed.
