Oak Ridge QB Jerrell Antoine, ATH Deangelo Antoine not brothers, but both have Louisville offers

Oak Ridge quarterback Jerrell Antoine and athlete Deangelo Antoine are not brothers.

They share many things in common, which is why the misnomer circulates amongt college coaches when they first meet the talented duo.

But there is no blood relation between the two.

“You could basically say we’re brothers,” said Deangelo, a rising sophomore. “Since I came to the team, I noticed we both had the same last name. We’re good friends, we chill outside of school, play video games. If I have something he needs, I give it to him and he’ll do the same for me.”

Jerrell, a rising junior, added: “We get that a lot. Everybody asks us if we’re brothers, but it’s just a coincidence that we go to the same school and have the same last name.”

You can now add an offer from Louisville to the things they have in common.

Louisville linebackers coach Brian Jean-Mary extended verbal offers to the Antoines last week, giving them their first college scholarship offers.

“It feels good that colleges are looking at you while you’re young,” Jerrell Antoine said. “I’m proud and still working hard … I’ll keep working hard to get more offers from other schools.”

The underclassmen are now on the recruiting radar way ahead of schedule, but Oak Ridge head coach Elijah Williams — who played at Florida for Louisville head coach Charlie Strong — said that’s what a school like Louisville has to do in order to make a splash.

“He’s doing a great job coming down to Florida and coaching kids,” Williams said of Strong. “They know you have to jump on them early outside of Florida because it’s hard.”

Williams predicts that the Cardinals won’t be the only ones jumping on the Antoines early.

More than 15 schools visited Oak Ridge last week and Florida is expected to be in attendance during the team’s spring game versus Jones at 7 p.m., Tuesday (May 22).

Jerrell threw for 1,541 yards, 12 touchdowns and 10 interceptions as a sophomore while also adding six touchdowns on the ground. Williams said that Louisville looks at Jerrell Antoine (6-1, 160) as a Teddy Bridgewater type of player.

“He’s a slim kid, but he has a strong, big-time arm,” Williams said. “He makes all the throws to the sideline and he’s athletic.”

Although Antoine has emerged as a DI quarterback, Deangelo Antoine might be turn out to be the Pioneers’ biggest commodity by the time his recruitment is over.

“Everybody that comes likes him,” Williams said.

There is a decent chance that Florida might be the next school to offer Deangelo Antoine, who was part of a 4x400-meter and 4x100-meter relay teams that made it to the state regionals in track.

He plays all over the field for Oak Ridge, although he’s likely a corner in college. At 5-foot-9, 165-pounds, Deangelo Antoine is a bit undersized but has three years to grow. He compensates for his stature with excellent on-field speed, natural ball skills and strength, as he bench presses 250 pounds.

The Antoines represent the Pioneers’ youth movement. Seniors such as linebacker Dontay Perkins, offensive lineman Herve Thelemaque and corner Algie Alexander provide leadership, but junior running back Trey Arthur (ran for 1,085 yards last year) and junior offensive lineman Daquane Wilkie (6-5, 230) form a strong nucleus that will grow along with Jerrell and Deangelo.

“We have a chance to be a great team,” Deangelo Antoine said. “We’re very young, so we have time to learn and build things together. I think in the future, we’ll be winning a lot of games.”
