Know someone who went to Lake-Sumter State College, formerly Lake-Sumter Community College, who is deserving of special recognition?
LSSC is accepting nominations through Aug. 22 for the third annual Distinguished Alumni and LSSC Hall of Fame Awards. The awards ceremony will be at 5:30 p.m. Oct. 9 at Mission Inn Resort & Club in Howey-in-the-Hills.
Alumni, members of the community, faculty and staff who have achieved prominence in their careers and made significant contributions to LSSC, their communities and the lives of others will be honored.
Anyone who completed a three-hour credit or noncredit course is eligible.
Nomination forms are available at lssc.edu, under "News."
Sponsorships and table hosts are available for the event and range from $250 to $1,000.
Tickets for the event are $35; the price includes dinner.

Meet the teacher
Rimes Early Learning and Literacy Center, 3101 Schoolview St., Leesburg, will have meet the teacher from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Aug. 14.
East Ridge High School's Athletic Boosters will meet at 6 p.m. Aug. 13 in the school's cafeteria, 13322 Excalibur Road, Clermont.
Lake Minneola High, 101 N. Hancock Road, Minneola, will have new student orientation from 5 to 8 p.m. Aug. 14 in the auditorium and returning students can pick up their iPad and schedule from 4 to 8 p.m. Aug. 12 or Aug. 13 in the cafeteria.
New students will receive a student ID. Photos will be taken in the cafeteria. New students will receive iPad orientation and a tour of the campus.
Every student must bring a parent or guardian with them or they will not be allowed to pick up their iPad.
For security purposes, each parent or guardian must provide a state-issued photo ID, military ID, or driver's license before the iPad may be checked out to a student. A $30 iPad user and maintenance fee is required (cash or money order).
Minneola Schoolhouse Library will present the following free back-to-school events at the library, 100 S. Main Ave.
•Thursday at 5 p.m. Kelly Young, a former elementary teacher, will read the book "Have You Filled a Bucket Today? A Guide to Daily Happiness for Kids," by Carol McCloud and David Messing. Each child will receive their own bucket.
•Aug. 14 at 5 p.m. Young will read "Back to School Tortoise" by Lucy M. George and Merel Eyckerman. Each child will receive an incentive for a positive thought concerning the new school year.
School supplies drive
The First Green Bank in Mount Dora is hosting a back-to-school supplies drive to benefit Round Lake Elementary School's children and families.
Items needed include colored pencils, crayons, markers, glue sticks and packs of loose-leaf paper
All supplies can be dropped off at the bank, 18251 U.S. Highway 441, through Aug. 15.
The Florida Hospital Waterman Foundation and Lake-Sumter State College Foundation will host the 16th annual professionals' seminar from 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Aug. 22 in the Magnolia Room at the college's Leesburg campus, 9501 U.S. Highway 441.
The free seminar, "Waves of Changes: Oceans of Opportunity," is sponsored by First National Bank of Mount Dora
Some of the topics will include tax and estate planning, Affordable Care Act, ethics and benefits of a healthy workforce.
Participants can earn continuing-education credits.
A continental breakfast and lunch will be provided.
