Larry Eugene Smedley enlisted in the Marine Corps on April 7, 1966. Following his training, he was sent to South Vietnam. On December 20-21, 1967 near Phouc Ninh in Quang Nam Province Smedly led his 6-man-squad to attack 20 Viet Cong moving toward Hill 41 with rocket launchers and mortars, according to the Florida Memory web site. Although wounded by a grenade, Smedley charged against a machine gun emplacement until hit. Seriously wounded, he continued a one-man assault, destroying the machine gun. However, he was struck in the chest and killed. He is interred in Arlington National cemetery and was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor.
