According to the police report, Tyler Charles Jenkins placed a chair in Interstate 4's fast lane, and the group watched as Strohsal, driving home to DeLand, swerved to keep from hitting it about 1:30 a.m. Strohsal's unmarked patrol car struck a guardrail a half-mile east of Saxon Boulevard and bounced off. With his headlights broken and his vehicle disabled, he left the car and tried to make it to safety on the highway's shoulder. But an oncoming vehicle hit him. The driver, Dwayne Love, 19, was charged with driving on a suspended license and misdemeanor DUI. Jenkins was charged with manslaughter, and two other teens were charged as accessories after the fact. Sergeant Strohsal had served with the Longwood Police Department for 18 years and had previously served with the New York City Police Department for 14 years.
