Here's dream casting: Oscar-winner Christopher Walken will play Captain Hook in NBC's "Peter Pan Live!"
The network announced the casting Sunday; the live broadcast will be Dec. 4.
Walken is a great song-and-dance man who won acclaim for his dramatic roles, including "The Deer Hunter," "Pulp Fiction" and "Catch Me If You Can." But he also starred in the movie "Hairspray," and he has demonstrated he can do live television by hosting "Saturday Night Live."
"We're so happy to reunite with Chris, who starred in our film version of 'Hairspray,' " Craig Zadan and Neil Meron, executive producers of "Peter Pan," said in a statement. "The exhilarating thing about doing these live musicals is giving the stage to a thrilling performer like Chris, and seeing his once-in-a-lifetime performance unfold at the same moment the audience is watching at home."
Walken said in a statement: "I started my career in musicals and it's wonderful after all this time, at this point in my career, to be in this classic musical I watched as a child and to work with Neil Meron and Craig Zadan again after 'Hairspray.' It’s a chance to put on my tap shoes again."
Zadan and Meron were behind the high-rated "Sound of Music Live!" with Carrie Underwood last season. The producers are trying to bring musicals to television with regularity as event programming.
"Peter Pan" was a big hit for NBC when the stars of the 1954 Broadway musical, Mary Martin as Peter and Cyril Ritchard as Hook, repeated their roles on television.
Casting for Peter Pan has not been announced.
