Moving East After the Big East accepted the reality of losing Miami, Boston College and West Virginia, commissioner Mike Tranghese targeted Conference USA teams as replacements. Louisville, Cincinnati and USF were the football members, with DePaul and Marquette as non-football joinees. The Cardinals repaid the Big East by saving the league's football from potential BCS expulsion, launching themselves high in the polls, winning the league in 2006 and beating Wake Forest in the 2007 Orange Bowl.
