One of the best landmarks in North Florida in our Best of Florida Travel series. Kingsley Plantation (Fort George Island, Jacksonville; nps.gov/timu; 904-251-3537). Floridas legacy of slavery is visible, not just in the plantation house, the kitchen house and barn but also in the ruins of 25 slave cabins. Zephaniah Kingsley grew sea-island cotton and indigo. His wife, purchased as a slave, was freed in 1811 and helped manage the plantation. Later on, the Kingsley family moved to the island of Hispañola (in whats now the Dominican Republic) where descendants of the family still live.
