To those who will spend at least part of today honoring our troops who gave their utmost — many their all - in fighting on behalf of our nation. Buried in our cemeteries are thousands of members of our Armed Forces from wars past and present, and today especially is a day to show our gratitude for their dedication and service. Some died defending American soil or on behalf of American interests. Others came home to strife but somehow made productive lives for themselves and their families. Others never did recover from the horrors of war. All deserve our utmost respect, and we salute them and their families.
Today also will see families and friends visiting gravesites of non-servicemembers, observing Memorial Day by tidying up weeds or placing flowers on burial grounds. It’s a solemn day of remembrance, and one on which we all should pause and give our thanks and respects.
The school, which this year houses more than 400 students in first through fourth grades, operates in the former strip mall on North Imperial Avenue in El Centro that once drew shoppers to department stores such as Mervyns and Sears. Today it has been revamped and modernized into a school that draws rave reviews from parents whose children attend it.
Among the benefits touted by school officials and parents alike are the dual-immersion program in which children learn Spanish and English simultaneously and the six pillars of character instilled in students. These are fairness, trustworthiness, citizenship, respect, responsibility and caring.
Thumbs up also to the school’s budding drill team, which recently won top awards in the 27th annual Miss Dance Drill Team USA competition at Six Flags Magic Mountain in Valencia.
To the coaches and debate teams of Holtville Middle School and Calexico High School, which placed first and second in their respective categories this month in the California Migrant Education Program’s first State Speech and Debate Tournament in Ventura.
The five-member Holtville team and three-person Calexico team were among 450 migrant students competing in the event.
