Trump’s Xenophobic Tweet

As rabbis in Greater Hartford, we add our voices to those of religious leaders around the world in condemning President Donald Trump’s retweeting of incendiary, anti-Muslim videos. The original source of these videos is Britain First, a discredited group of far-right British extremists.

Messages from the president such as this are not simply deeply offensive and irresponsible. They are dangerous, fanning the flames of xenophobia and encouraging intolerance and even violence against Muslims, immigrants and other minorities. (Indeed, this tweet was welcomed by American white supremacist David Duke and Jayda Fransen, deputy leader of Britain First, whose group was given a major boost.)

We cannot and will not stand idly by when our Muslim sisters and brothers are threatened. As Jews, we know only too well where such hate-mongering can lead.

During this month, as the days grow ever shorter, the Jewish community is celebrating the holiday of Hanukkah. In defiance of the darkness, we will kindle flames of hope, renewal and religious freedom. We will rededicate ourselves to work for justice and freedom for all, so that knowledge, understanding and love may always prevail.
