I recently completed reading an article in the July 2 issue of Time magazine, a profile of Sister Simone Campbell and membership of the Leadership Conference of Women Religious.
I want to commend her for her fortitude. In my opinion, the nuns of the world are the backbone of the church. They came to my hometown of Aberdeen in 1901 and established a hospital and school and staffed them; becoming teachers, nurses and administrators. They did this throughout the country.
Today, they showcase Presentation College, a four-year institution in Aberdeen. The LCWR, as are others, are on the frontline and one does not pick and choose whom they should administer to in a crisis. I have a Presentation Order friend who is still working with young girls and I am hopeful that she would do what is best for any of her girls, regardless.
I would challenge the bishops and others to roll up their sleeves and get down in the trenches before condemning the efforts of the LCWR. Thank you Sister Simone and my friend in Sioux Falls.
