Running On Empty

I’ve been spending a lot of time at my parents’ house in Massachusetts lately. Many people have been coming and going in that house including Sherry, the housekeeper and Erica, my mother’s nurse. Sherry and Erica recently bought the new Hyundai Elantra. You should have heard how excited they were to tell each other about their cars the other day.
Sherry traded in a Kia Sorento for a baby blue Elantra loaded with everything except fog lights, a skylight and leather seats, she said. She showed me the car after using the phone button on the car’s steering wheel to call my mother’s house. At first I mistook the Elantra for the larger Sonata. Both have the highly stylized creased side panels that give the cars a sporty look. “Look at this,” Sherry said, pointing to the large GPS screen.
She is most excited, however, about the Elantra’s 40 mile per gallon highway rating. When she and her boyfriend took the car on its inaugural highway run, however, they pressed it far above the speed limit. You won’t get 40 miles per gallon with that kind of driving, I said. OTR’s car reviewer and columnist Jim MacPherson wrote about how Hyundai took the Elantra from 34 to 40 mpg. You can read his review of the Elantra here.
