The workday had just ended and my companion said she wanted to go somewhere "quiet and cozy" for a drink and a bite. Naturally, my mind was on only dessert, so I had to choose wisely.
Happy hour at Fire was virtually deserted when we arrived, but I couldn't see why. The restaurant's bar opened right onto downtown State Street and the vibe of the place screamed, "take a load off."
The interior had an almost European flair to it. A cool purple-to-green spectrum colored the elegant lighting and comfortable appointments. A cubby in the rear wall subtly displayed a few fresh white daisies. But the cushy little lounge was not averse exposing some rustic brick behind the bar.
Martinis were $5 (down from $8) and all appetizers half price. We had some braised beef nachos ($4.50) and bistro fries ($3.50). The appetizers were nicely spiced, the mood was relaxing and the drinks – well – not bad. Fire proved to be a good environment for getting comfortable.
An hour or two slipped by unnoticed and almost at once a wine tasting party descended on the bar. When I saw how many patrons resembled secretaries or businessman types, I realized I was not the only one who saw Fire's potential for a rendezvous. The place got downright boisterous.
