Trayvon Martin shooting

On Feb. 26, 17-year-old Trayvon Martin was shot and killed in Sanford, Fla. The shooter was identified as George Zimmerman, a 28-year-old white man who admitted to killing Martin, but claimed he was acting in self-defense. It took weeks for Zimmerman to be arrested, causing  national outrage over what many felt was a racially motivated shooting and subsequent mishandling of the incident by the Sanford Police Department.  Zimmerman was charged with second degree murder on April 11 and will stand trial in June 2013.
