First criticized as a device that unnecessarily filled the gap between the smartphone and the laptop, the hottest gadget of 2011 was undoubtedly the tablet computer. The iPad 2, released in March, was the most popular of its kind. According to IHS iSuppli Display Materials & Systems Service, Apple was expected to sell 18.6 million units in the last quarter of 2011. A newcomer to the tablet game, the Amazon Kindle Fire, was the second most popular and was expected to sell 3.9 million units in the last three months of the year.
