At 2:22 a.m. January 2nd, Indianapolis recorded its first murder of 2010.

Walter Jones, 41, was found shot to death inside his apartment at the Whitfield Square Apartments on the city's northeast side. A neighbor called police after hearing three to five gunshots.

"When they arrived, they also notice that the door to apartment B was open," said IMPD Sergeant Matt Mount. "They went inside and found Jones lying there."

Outside the back patio of the apartment, officers found Paul Moore, 21. He had also been shot and was listed in critical but stable condition at Wishard Memorial Hospital.

"There had been three individuals there at the apartment earlier in the night," said Sgt. Mount. "They had apparently been in a fight that broke out. One of the individuals left, came back with a gun and shot those two and left."

Jones had reported a break-in attempt at his apartment on December 29th.

Last year Metro Police investigated 98 criminal homicides.
