About 100 volunteers at Gleaners Food Bank got some high-powered help from several stars from the WWE.
Wrestler David Otunga, along with Divas Alicia Fox and AJ Lee helped to pack up lunches for needy children and senior citizens.
"Packing backpacks for kids to take home over the weekend so they have enough food for an entire weekend," Otunga told Fox59. "Packing boxes for senior citizens. Just doing everything we can to help."
The effort is part of a weekly process at Gleaners. The food bank has worked with school districts to identify about 8,500 area children who need food assistance on weekends because school lunches are not available on those days.
While the WWE is in town this weekend for a big Sunday evening show at Bankers Life Fieldhouse, the organization is reaching out to the community.
"It's just really cool to see the whole town come out to support the town because, we have to help each other, so this is awesome." Alicia Fox said. "I'm really happy to be a part of it."
The WWE has a long history of helping those in need through various community organizations around the nation.
Diva AJ Lee was happy to take her place on the bag-packing line. Her own background is similar to many of the children being helped by Gleaners. Before she was a superstar of the wrestling world, her life included hunger and homelessness.
"It wasn't that many years ago that these places were helping me and feeding my family," she said. "So it's amazing to get the opportunity with the WWE to help out a little bit."
Otunga also has a history of reaching out to the less fortunate. Many wrestling fans may be surprised to learn that Otunga is a Harvard Law graduate who practiced with one of the top law firms in Chicago.
"I did a lot of public interest pro-bono work," he said. "And so giving back is something that's really important to me."
