The Indianapolis Motor Speedway will honor outgoing Governor Mitch Daniels on Race Day.

Daniels will serve as the honorary starter for the 96th running of the Indianapolis 500.

"My first instinct was to said 'oh no you want to find somebody else,’ but then my fan instincts took over,” said Daniels.

A green flag was presented to Daniels during a ceremony at the Speedway Wednesday. Daniels said he's grateful for the honor.

Speedway CEO Jeff Belskus said it’s just one way to thank a long-time friend to both IMS and auto racing.
