SOUTH BEND — A former youth minister at a local Catholic church is now facing charges of child molesting after he previously was accused of touching himself in front of a teenager.
St. Joseph County prosecutors in March charged Gregory Sweeney, 56, with performing sexual conduct in front of a minor, a Class D felony.
But prosecutors have added a second charge of child molesting, a Class C felony.
Sweeney formerly was a youth minister at Christ the King Catholic Church. He was fired in March when the first charge against him surfaced.
An affidavit filed in May that amended the charges accused Sweeney of inappropriately touching a child over a period of several years.
Sweeney was first charged in March when a teenager told police he saw Sweeney watching pornography and touching himself multiple times, according to court documents.
Sweeney told detectives he is addicted to pornography.
He is scheduled to go to trial on both charges in August.
He could face up to eight years in prison if convicted of child molesting and up to three years in prison for the lesser charge.
