Non-profit group GreenLockers has found a practical and environmentally friendly way to deal with the junk left in lockers at the end of the school year.
The organization collected more than 20,000 pounds of gently used and new school supplies, books and clothes to give to any local charity or teacher who needs them.
“It was a huge room that was to the ceiling when they first started," says Stacy Bice, a Concord art teacher and volunteer for the supplies giveaway.
The event is first come, first serve, and aims to help any group who helps children.
“It does save a ton of money, and they were things that would have been discarded or thrown away,” Bice says. “It's like, 'What? You're going to throw that away? Somebody else could use it!' So, it's a good way just to recycle those things that could have been used by someone else."
Meijer also donated brand new items such as notebook paper and backpacks. Only teachers and those associated with a charity can collect supplies.
Bice says so far, more than 20 different organizations have benefited from the giveaway, which continues Saturday, July 20 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
