ELKHART – The start of school is just weeks away, and parents are getting an idea of just how much that will impact their finances.
According to the National Retail Federation, you will spend about $635 on shoes, clothes, supplies and electronics this year.
Saturday morning, families struggling financially to get those supplies will get a helping hand in Elkhart.
Program organizers for “Back2School Elkhart” will give away 2,000 backpacks filled with school supplies and 1,000 pairs of shoes at Concord Mall.
It’s geared towards families with children in the Elkhart and Concord School systems to equip kids for the coming school year.
“When a child is prepared, and they have got what they need, they’ve got their backpack full of supplies, they’re ready to go,” said Program Coordinator James Taylor. “They’ve got a new pair of shoes on their feet, it brings a certain confidence, so what we want to try to do is build that esteem.”
A big component to make it work is donations, whether corporate, from local businesses, churches and civic organizations and even individuals. Without that, organizers say they would be hard pressed to get it off the ground and running.
“We survive by the in-kind donations, that we get backpacks, school supplies, crayons,” Program Organizer Rod Roberson said. “Those things are so critical to us, being able to serve the greater need.”
Wednesday evening, July 24, organizers have set up a way to drop off supplies for the program at Concord Mall.
“If you have book bags, paper, pencils, pens, anything you think that a kid needs going to school, bring it right to the information desk,” added Taylor. “We’ll be there to receive that. We’ll tuck it in backpacks. We’ll bless the kids with it Saturday, the 27th.”
Doors open at the mall Saturday at 9 a.m.
If you would like to drop off supplies Wednesday night, go to the Concord Mall information desk between 5:30 and 6:30 p.m.
