Virginia Beach—A Lancaster County family is mourning the loss of their teenage son. The 17-year-old was shot to death in Virginia Beach and now police are looking for answers.
Seventeen-year-old Kody Scruton was a former student at McCaskey East High School in Lancaster. He recently moved to the Virginia Beach area to live with a relative. Just over a week ago, the teen was found dead, the apparent victim of a shooting.
Scruton's body was found near a park close to Norfolk International Airport on June 4. Police say he appears to have been shot and his body dumped behind a building, near a wooded area.
At this point, Virginia Beach Police have very few details to go on. According to a Virginia newspaper, the Lancaster County native recently moved to the Norfolk area to live with some relatives and take online classes. Police say they are working hard to find out any details to try and crack this case open.
"We can't bring the victim back. The only thing we can do for the family is do everything we can to get this case solved and make an arrest and try to bring that closure to the family," said Adam Bernstein with the Virginia Beach Police Department.
Scrotun's family and friends have set up a makeshift memorial at the site of their loved one's death. According to reports, much of his family still lives in the Lancaster County area including his mother, stepfather, grandmother and two siblings.
Again, police aren't releasing many details about leads in the case. No arrests have been made.
Kody Scrotun is being remembered by friends and family on Facebook as well. A memorial page has been set up in his honor. Facebook page.
