UNIONDALE, N.Y. (WPIX)
A staff member of the Greenfield Cemetery in Uniondale may have made the mistake due to miscommunication, spokesman Mike Deery said Friday. Unfortunately, the cemetery lacks efficient checks and balances to be able to find the exact cause of the mix-up.
The grave containing the body of Mallory Pailliere, 27, was disturbed when gravediggers opened Pailliere's plot last Saturday and placed a Freeport man's coffin on top of his. Pailliere's mother noticed the mistake when she visited the grave Tuesday.
The cemetery also admitted to making a second error by exhuming the Freeport man's body without getting his family's permission. Town officials are still trying to locate his family.
The cemetery suspects the error occurred when the Carl C. Burnett Funeral Home in Hempstead called the cemetery, and received inaccurate coordinates of the grave for the Freeport man. He was supposed to be buried in the same section as Pailliere and in the same lot, but not in the same grave, Deery said.
The Town of Hempstead is investigating the incident and Nassau District Attorney Kathleen Rice said she is also looking into it.
