A woman who was mowing the lawn outside her home died Tuesday after an out-of-control van jumped the curb and ran her down, police said.

According to authorities, the commercial work van was traveling at a high speed when it flew up the driveway of a home on Cathedral Avenue at around 10 a.m., mowing down the woman and smashing into the house.

Nassau Detective Lieutenant Kevin Smith said the van hit the home with such force "it scattered items that were on the front all the way to the back of the house."

The victim's body was recovered about 20 feet from the home where a twisted lawn mower was also found. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver and the passenger of the van remained at the scene and waited for police. The pair, described as a man and an 18-year-old woman, were not being cooperative, police said.

It's unclear whether alcohol or drugs played a role in the fatal accident.

A neighbor told PIX 11 News that the victim was an older woman who loved to cut the grass and tend to her garden. Her identity wasn't immediately released.
