NEW YORK (WPIX)—An elderly woman was killed Friday in a morning blaze that broke out inside an apartment on the Lower East Side, officials said.
The woman, identified as 72-year-old Claudete Rivera, apparently used the burners on her stove to stay warm. Investigators believe that Rivera's clothes caught fire from the open flame just before 11:30 a.m.
Rivera was pronounced dead at the scene.
No other injuries were reported.
