Elderly Woman Killed in Lower East Side Fire
An elderly woman was killed Friday in a morning blaze that broke out inside an apartment on the Lower East Side, officials said.

The woman, identified as 72-year-old Claudete Rivera, apparently used the burners on her stove to stay warm. Investigators believe that Rivera's clothes caught fire from the open flame just before 11:30 a.m.

The fire eventually spread through the second floor apartment, tearing through the entire floor of the Ludlow Street building.

Rivera was pronounced dead at the scene.

No other injuries were reported.
