Cynthia Urbin’s son died from a congenital brain condition in 2010; Wednesday night, she attended the wake for his best friend -- 18-year old Brittany Walsh.
“It’s so sad. I lost a daughter, right after i lost my son”, Urbin told PIX11.
The Urbins showed us a photo of Brittany playing miniature golf with Christopher and her boyfriend, Sean.
Those were happier times, before Sunday night.
Surveillance video of a the fatal crash along Montauk Highway in Lindenhurst shows an accused drunk driver – 31-year old Michael Grasing of Babylon -- crashing into Walsh’s vehicle.
Now Suffolk County prosecutors are looking for witnesses to help bolster the case against Grasing.
Grasing’s silver Nissan Maxima slammed into the back of Walsh’s vehicle so forceful that it flipped her car, and sent it barreling into a utility pole.
Wash had just finished a shift at a localK-Martstore and graduated high school just two days earlier.
She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Walsh’s aunt says the family also wants to know more about the circumstances leading up the crash.
“I don’t know how anyone could be that drunk -- and drive that fast. It’s mind boggling”, Carol Grubel told Pix11.
Grasing’s had a blood alcohol level of .30 -- nearly four times above the legal limit.
But right now, he is charged only with Driving While Intoxicated.
But Suffolk County DA Thomas Spota says he wants a grand jury to hear new testimony from witnesses who may have seen Grasing speeding and swerving in out of traffic -- just minutes before the crash.
“One eyewitness overhears another operator of motor vehicle at a light actually yelling to the defendant to pull over, stop driving or he’s going to kill somebody”, said Spota.
Grasing plead not guilty to driving while intoxicated. There will surely be questions about reports that he already has two arrests on his record for DWI.
