Family members are gathered near the bedside of the 57 year old Nassau County Police Officer who is fighting for his life after suffering horrific injuries when he was struck by a car while doing his job.. He remains in intensive care while Nassau County Police investigate the accident and try to figure out how it could have happened.
The officer---a 29 year veteran---was on radar detail on the Nassau Expressway just before noon when his life changed in a fleeting second. He stepped into the busy roadway to pull over a car when he was struck by another vehicle turning the bend. Nassau County Detective Sergeant Jim Skopek explained, "As he was slowing the traffic down, we believe the vehicle that struck him may have been traveling around another vehicle and hence the officer didn't see that oncoming traffic as this vehicle may not have seen him in the roadway."
The windshield of the black Audi was smashed as the officer was tossed over the hood. The distraught driver, who had two passengers in the car, stopped immediately and tried to assist the officer. Police said the driver was cooperating fully and that the preliminary investigation shows no signs of criminality. The expressway was shut doe in both directions for a period of time. The officer was said to be in bad shape when he was airlifted to Nassau University Medical Center. According to Detective Skopek, the officer suffered "multiple fractures, skull, leg, pelvis and internal injuries.
Officer is listed in very critcal but stable condition tonight. Although there were no signs of criminality, police have impounded the car for safety inspection. As of now, no charges have been filed against the 43 year old driver.
