Transformer Fire Sparks Outages In Queens
A three-alarm blaze ripped through a Con Edison substation in the Little Neck section of Queens leaving 700 customers in the dark Friday morning.

There were clouds of heavy black smoke and flames of 20 feet shot out to the sky, witnesses said.

According to Con Edison, the fire which erupted shortly after 8 a.m. in the 4,000 kilovolt substation at 244th Street and Northern Boulevard, caused over 100 power outages.

Fire officials worked hard to put out the blaze, before several responding engine companies were called in to help contain the fire. Firefighters initially had to wait for Con Ed to turn off electricity before being able to tackle the blaze. Hazmat crews were also called to the scene.
