Drunk Motorcyclist Crashes Into, Kills Teen Bicyclist
A teenaged bicyclist who was changing a flat tire is dead after a drunk motorcyclist crashed into him Monday night.

The name of the bicyclist was not immediately available, though state police identified the victim as a 19-year-old from Dix Hills.

The accident occurred north of the Goose Creek drawbridge at about 8 p.m. as the teen was changing a flat tire on the bike path next to the Wantagh State Parkway. The path borders the parkway and its distance from the road varies along the stretch.

Witnesses told police that James J. Ryan of New Hyde Park was speeding when he lost control of his 2002 Harley-Davidson motorcycle. Ryan drifted off of the northbound side of the parkway when he crossed onto the bike path and crashed into the cyclist. Police say Ryan was intoxicated when he crashed into the teen.

The teen was airlifted to Nassau University Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. Ryan suffered multiple injuries as a result of the crash and was taken to the same hospital, where he was admitted into the Intensive Care Unit.

Ryan has been charged with driving while intoxicated, second-degree vehicular manslaughter, second-degree reckless manslaughter, reckless driving and second-degree reckless endangerment.
