SUFFOLK COUNTY, N.Y. (WPIX)—A high school student walking home from class Wednesday night in Brentwood was shot in yet another incident of violence in Suffolk County.
The shooting happened just after 10:30 p.m. when Joel Nieves, 16, of Bayshore, was headed home after taking night school classes at Brentwood High School. Two or three Hispanic males in dark clothing confronted him, authorities said, and at least one of the males opened fire, hitting Nieves five times in the back.
Nieves was taken to Southside Hospital in Bayshore and is in critical condition.
Early last week the Suffolk County Police Department put another five detectives on the street in light of a rash of violent incidents in the past year. Since December 1st, 2009, Suffolk County police have made 21 felony arrests and have apprehended 51 people on gang charges.
The investigation into Nieves' assailants is ongoing and detectives are asking anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.
