Police are searching for a suspect in the shooting of a former New York Police Department cadet in the Bronx.

The victim is in stable condition after being shot in the stomach in the lobby of his apartment building in the Longwood section of the Bronx.

The man was shot near the intersection of Avenue St. John and Beck Street at about 5:30 a.m., police said.

Police say the former cadet was on his way home when a struggle ensued in the lobby of his building, at 950 Avenue St. John. Authorities say the gunman fired a shot that struck the man in the stomach. His name and age have not been released.

The man was taken to Lincoln Hospital where he remains in stable condition, according to police.

Police say the victim was released from the police academy after being suspended several times.
