CLEVELAND, OH (PIX11) - Some serious eaters descended on Cleveland Thursday with dreams of dogging competition in their attempt to make it all the way to the top. Professional eaters, a relatively new term, took part in qualifying for a spot in Nathan's Famous International Hot Dog Eating Contest at Coney Island on July 4th.
The regional contest featred Pat Bertoletti who ranks second in the world of competitive eating. He won by downing 38 dogs. Cleveland had its own favorite eater, Scott “Beefcake” Bickel but he fell short in front of the hometown crowd.
The Nathan’s Famous contest circuit holds regional competitions in a dozen cities and each winner advances to the July 4 championship. This was the first year Cleveland hosted a qualifier.
