Michael Phelps Breaks World Olympic Medal Record

Michael Phelps broke the Olympic Medal record today, on Tuesday, July 31st, with his 19th medal, with the United States blowing through the competition in the 4x200 freestyle relay, in the London Olympic Games

With 19 medals over three Olympic Games, Phelps has now surpassed the Soviet gymnast Larisa Latynina, who made off with her share in 1956, 1960 and 1964. Not only has he broken a world record, he was finally able to get his first gold medal of these games, after his disappointing settle for silver as he glided into 2nd place at the end of his butterfly earlier Tuesday.

The United States team made up of Ryan Lochte, Conor Dwyer, Ricky Berens and Phelps won in 6 minutes, 59.70 seconds. France took the silver, while China was third.

Phelps' career haul is now 15 golds, two silvers and two bronzes.
